Tabriz, North WestPersia
c.1890
Complexity of pattern, characteristic of antique Tabriz Persian carpets, reaches a peak in this piece. There are at least seven distinct pattern layers employing various rinceaux, islimi, arabesques and tendrils in the field dominatedby a large rust red medallion and surrounding ivory corners. This is a fine version of the “book cover” layout whichcan be traced back to 16th century PersianSafavid originals. The elaboration extends to the yellow main border with a variety of the vines and palmettes, and the minor borders continue the same theme.
The dyes are well chosen and the color range is exceptionally wide with more their a dozen shades easily distinguished.
The condition is excellent with all finishes original. It is an especially fine complement to the period continental furnishing, although, surprisingly, it works well in almost any other décor.
