Medallion Rug, Probably Oushak
Late 17th Century
This rug is almost identical to one in the Applied Arts Museum, Budapest. Both employ an open red field with complex hooked corners framing a small ensuite lozenge medallion, as well as wide navy main borders displaying a stylized cloud band pattern. The foundation is all wool and the medium coarse weave is done in Turkish (symmetric) knots. Besides the Budapest example, there is a related piece in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y. Our example was unknown until recently and was unpublished. There has been re-piling in the field, but the rest of the rug is quite good for it’s age.
