This Serapi-quality Heriz from Azerbaijan province has a striking blue-green eight lobed sub-medallion within a larger light rose pendanted medallion, all on a saturated madder plain field, closely bracketed by ivory angular spandrels The large pendants are securely attached to the main medallion and feature three leafy sections each. The large stylised buds in the corners are in a particularly engaging sky blue. The navy border is in the ever-popular rosette and bent leaf design. The overall drawing is bold and devoid of diverting minor elements which often detract from the design in later pieces. The weave is particularly firm and leathery, and the dyes are all from natural sources. The clean design and crisp drawing are typical of the best Heriz area work of this most desirable period.
