Shirvan Eastern Caucasian long rug
Dated either 1256 0r 1244(1839 or 1827)
The dark indigo field displays a Caucasian version in of in-and-out palmette pattern from 17th century Persian carpets. The layout is based on three palmette cruciforms around which are scattered cogwheel rosettes, half medallions and a variety of small stars, flowers, and lozenges , detailed in green and yellow. There is a panel and with a date 1244 or 1256 near the top of the field.
The narrow sapphire blue border has gold rosettes and vine pattern and is flanked by ivory S and block meanders.
This rug is a fine example of a small group of the similar pieces, almost all bearing date in a early 19 century, on either blue or red grounds. All examples are rare and very infrequently encountered in the trade. It is possible that a single workshop was responsible for all of them.
The antique Shirvan rug is ready to go, and in overall very good condition.
